REVIEW - TULLAMORE "Eire - Celtic Punk" (2013)

Tullamore "Eire - Celtic Punk"
Release date: March 27th,2013
Running time: 23:45, 7 tracks + 1 hidden track

Italy has an interesting Celtic punk scene with several bands singing in English. But there are also some young bands that sing in their mother tongue. Tullamore is one of them, a whiskey soaked eight piece from Pavia (whiskey means Tullamore Dew, of course).

The band was founded in 2007 and two years later they released their first 4 track demo. Their new demo is a 7 track CD. The sound is sharper, blending traditional music instruments such as mandolin, acoustic guitar and tin whistle with electric guitar, bass and drums. Tullamore’s music is closer to Strawdaze than to Dirty Artichokes. Not only is the instrumentation similar, but both of them sing in Italian. Apart from that, the mandolin and tin whistle are played in a Skels way and the general attitude is that of Dropkick Murphys early albums.

My faves: "Intro", “Poeta della Pinta",  a kick-ass tribute to Shane MacGowan featuring a passage from "IISFFGWG", “L’Ultimo Ribelle”, featuring their fellows from ska/punk’n’folk band Ashpipe, and “Rabbia e Cemento”,  with amazing mandolin and tin whistle on the traditional tune that has been added at the end of the song. Ah, and there is a hidden track, an Italian version of “Skinhead on The MBTA”.

Four out of seven songs are on their YouTube page. Go ahead, play them and then contact the Tullamore guys to buy their CD.

Tracklist:

1 - Intro 1:17
2 - Aria di Vittoria 3:14
3 - Poeta della Pinta 2:17
4 - L'Ultimo Ribelle feat. Ashpipe 2:55
5 - Figli dell'Odio 3:09
6 - Rabia e Cemento feat Dani (Melodie Distorte) 2:57
7 - Questa Strada 7:57

REVIEW - CELKILT "Everyday's St Patrick's Day!" (2013)

CelKilt "Everyday's St Patrick’s Day!" CelKilt 003/1
Release date: March 8, 2013
Running time: 26:42, 9 tracks

French Celtic rockers Celkilt released their third recording just before St. Patrick’s Day 2013. The follow-up to “Hey What’s Under Your Kilt?” is a 9 track mini-album titled “Everyday’s St. Patrick’s Day!”. The CD can be defined as a musical journey to Ireland, Hungary and Canada featuring fiddle, tin whistle, pipes and banjo.

Come in!” is an intro that is stuck to the second track, “Everyday’s St. Patrick’s Day!”. As usual, Celkilt blend fun and musicianship on this catchy number.

The following visit to Ireland is a set of polkas in a Sliabh Luachra vein: “Polkachien”. Celkilt have always mastered this kind of numbers, so this set is really amazing.

The next two tracks place Celkilt together with Hungarian stars Firkin and Paddy and the Rats. “The Goodbye Song” can rival with the band from Budapest and “Big Mouth” is a Celtic punk-pop number with Ramonesque lyrics showing a similar attitude to that of the band from Miskolc.

If “Polkachien” was a set of Irish polkas, “Polkilt” moves to The Dreadnoughts favourite territory. Awesome “la-la-la” vocals and Eastern Europe fiddling on this number.

Track no. 8 is the real visit to Hungary : Brahm’s “Hungarian Dance no. 5” (BTW, the Canadian band Leahy also recorded some Hungarian dances on their debut album)

Finally, the album finishes up with another set of tunes with Canadian reminiscences: “JJack MacIsaac”. Maybe the fiddling and the last tunes on the set can be related to Ashley MacIsaacHi How Are You Today” album. But I can also feel some Phil Cunningham’s arrangement on this set.

Celkilt are at the forefront of the European Celtic rock scene. The French band share their musical approach with the aforementioned Hungarian colleagues and even with The Mahones. Their live shows are blast. In fact, they toured the USA when this mini-album was released and their gigs were a great success.

Tracklist:

01 - Come In! 00:47
02 - Everyday's St Patrick’s Day! 3:20
03 - Polkachien 3:13
04 - The Goodbye Song 2:58
05 - Big Mouth 2:50
06 - Polkilt 1:38
07 - The Things That Money Just Can’t Buy 4:36
08 - Hungarian Kilt Dance #5 2:12
09 - JJack Macisaac 5:04

REVIEW - VAGRANT NATION "One for the Gallows" EP (2013)

Vagrant Nation "One for the Gallows"
Release date: March 23, 2013
Running time: 12:59, 4 tracks

Southern California has something special. Some say it’s the sun. Anyway, there is a huge punk scene and a fantastic Celtic punk scene around Los Angeles. Yeah, I know, it never rains in Southern California, but Ireland and Scotland are green because of the rain. It’s a sort of a paradox that a lot of excellent bands hail from SoCal: Lexington Field, Hoist the Colors, Brick Top Blaggers and Vagrant Nation.

Vagrant Nation was our Band of the Month in March 2013. They recorded a 4 track EP in 2012 and it was released in 2013. A top-notch  EP blending Celtic music and bluegrass. There is no filler on this recording, which highly recommendable. I find too difficult to choose only one track.

Salvation” is available as a free download at their reverbnation site (in fact it was included in our Sampler 2013 – Vol. III). It’s a catchy song featuring accordion, fiddle and banjo and great harmonies. I’m sure that you’ll love it.

A Place Inside” is another fantastic number and it’s my favourite song on the EP. If the fiddle part is really amazing on “Salvation”, on “A Place Inside” it’s the banjo which draws your attention. And, once again, the vocal harmonies are awesome.

One for the Gallows” is a “different” number. A slow fiddle at the beginning, then the song goes electric with a slight gypsy twist. After that, there is a Celtic instrumental part featuring fiddle and banjo. Once again, the fiddle slows down the tempo and finally the gypsy part is played. Interesting.

Finally, the present: a set of traditional tunes that they have titled “Molly and Johnny”. An acoustic Celtic punk number based on fiddle, double bass and guitar. Brilliant!

An advice: buy this EP, you won’t regret it. Celtic punk from California at its best.

Tracklist:

1 - Salvation 3:41
2 - A Place Inside 2:48
3 - One for the Gallows 4:08
4 - Molly and Johnny 2:22

NEW BLOG - LONDON CELTIC PUNKS

Our friends London Celtic Punks have just started a new blog.

Check it out regularly!

ROIOS - DAVE HUGHES AND THE RENEGADE FOLK PUNK BAND

(From the band's mailout)

"In other news, we've started collecting live recordings of the band (and solo shows) on our website as a bootleg collection. I love listening to bootlegs of my favourite bands, I think they give a better insight to how a band lives, works and 'is' over just having studio recordings. In these recordings, there are all the hits, rarer songs, covers and perhaps too much 'banter'.

Head over to the bootleg page to hear us at our best (almost), and worst (kind of)."

REVIEW - THE VANDON ARMS "No Loyalty Among Thieves" (2013)

The Vandon Arms "No Loyalty Among Thieves"
Release date: May 28, 2013
Running time: 39:23, 13 tracks

Some bands are formed, they release some demos or an EP straight away and after two years their debut album is out. As far as The Vandon Arms are concerned, things went in a different way. The guys from Des Moines released two kick-ass EPs in 2006, “Loosers and Boozers”, and 2008 “Health to Your Company”. Their mandolin driven Celtic punk got rave reviews (just have a look to this write-up on Shite’n’Onions) and everybody was looking forward to hearing their studio debut album. Nevertheless, they release a 10 track live album in 2009 and another EP in 2010. I guess that some fans were wondering if The Vandon Arms would  ever issue a studio album.

Fortunately they did it: their debut  album “No Loyalty Among Thieves” was out at the end of May 2013. The band has grown from a 4 piece based on mandolin to a  6 piece featuring mandolin, banjo, accordion and tin whistle. Not only have they improved as musicians, but their new sound is an interesting evolution.

There are 13 songs on “No Loyalty Among Thieves”, ten original, two traditional numbers (“Waxie’s Dargle” and “The Moonshiner”) and the cover they recorded for The Mahones tribute album (“Down the Boozer”). The band members say that they are influenced by the Dropkick Murphys early years, Rancid or The Killigans. Those inspirations can be easily found on some tracks for instance, Rancid and DKM on “Bodywrecker” and The Killigans on “Solid Ground” or “Young & Bored”. They are awesome songs but, IMHO, there are other tracks that should be highlighted:  those that show a similar attitude to that of Hoist The Colors, “Tie One On” an “Grab a Sovel”, together with The Mahones style anthem with a Tossers twist titled “Hell of a Night” and the last number ”Dance With the Devil”,  one of the best compositions from a musical point of view.

No Loyalty Among Thieves” is a must have for any Celtic punk fan.  Due to a missprint (Loyaly instead of Loyalty), the band has been selling the CDs at a reduced price. Hurry up! Maybe you can grab one of them yet.

Tracklist:

01. One Hell of a Night 4:00
02. Streets of Gold 1:54
03. Is This Your Life? 2:56
04. Waxies Dargle 1:32
05. Solid Ground 4:58
06. Bodywrecker 2:32
07. The Moonshiner 2:14
08. Rats in the Belly 3:16
09. Tie One On 3:10
10. Young and Bored 3:03
11. Grab a Shovel 2:20

INTERVIEW - BASTARDS ON PARADE

Bastards On Parade will be releasing “Empty Bottles & Broken Things” next August 30th, 2013. We have talked with David (vocals and guitar) about  the new album

Hi David. First of all, which  is the current line-up of the band?

It’s almost the same that recorded the previous album. Pablo (accordion) and Alber (electric guitar) instead of Ruper are the new members.

Where have you recorded the new album?

The disc was recorded at Bonham studio, in A Coruña. We have been working together with them  since the recording of  the "Death Shore Pirates" EP.

Regarding the tracklist, how many songs have made the album?

14 songs this time.

Are all of them songs or is there any instrumental number? Apparently you have recorded one song in Galician …

There is one self-penned instrumental and yes, a  number is sung in Galician. It’s a traditional song and the only cover on the album.

On your previous album some friends guested, particularly Andries “The Dutch Irish Bastard” on accordion and songwriting. Which "guest stars" will be featured on "Empty Bottles and Broken Things"?

We are very happy with all the buddies that have guested on the album: Finny McConnell, Johnny Rioux and Perez (Twenty Fighters) on vocals;  Perez has also made the artwork  once again; and we've had the pleasure of having the Galician folk band Tiruleque.

How did you meet Finny and The Mahones?

We organized the gig in A Coruña on  their 2008 tour, they were at my home and we became very good friends. Later we opened for them on their Spanish tour, we shared the stage at some European shows, we recorded a song for their 20th Anniversary tribute album … haha

The album is being mixed in the U.S. by Johnny Rioux. But, who has produced the album? And how did you get in contact with Johnny?

The album has been produced by the band. It’s OK when a producer helps you, but we wanted to be totally free.

We shared the stage with the Street Dogs in Germany and we met Johnny. We knew his work with Flatfoot 56. So I contacted him after having recorded  the “Shallow Waters” EP and he liked the project from the very beginning. We are very happy with his work and his help. Besides, it’s always an honor to work with people from your favorite bands.

A lot of Celtic punk bands are mastering their albums in Finland, Australia or the USA. Are you getting the album mixed abroad?

It’s going to be mixed at Mammoth Sound Mastering in California by Dan Randall. We are also very excited, he has worked  with Street Dogs, Strung Out ...

On which formats will the album be available?

It will be available on CD, digital and a limited vinyl edition.

Which label will release the album? Carnage again?

The album will be released by Wolverine Records, a German label.

Are you going to tour around Europe to support the album?

Sure, we will be touring Europe in September and October . We intend to play a lot of gigs and visit a lot of new places. Can’t wait!

In which countries have you felt more comfortable on stage?

Germany is always great and the Basque Country is not far behind.

I guess that people from all over the world have bought your previous recordings. Any uncommon place?

I don’t know what to say. We have got orders from Alaska, Colombia, Indonesia ..

Last year your bagpiper, Aspy, was touring with The Real McKenzies. This involved a short break for Bastards on parade. I guess that the experience  was amazing for him. Has this opened new doors for the band too?

We were not inactive.  We met Pablo and we kept on gigging and songwriting. So, we had more leisure time to work on the second album and we feel that this has paid off, we are very happy with the album.

Despite the evolution of the band, there are still some people that label you as a Dropkick Murphys wannabe band . Maybe it’s because your name was lifted from a DKM’ s song. Flatfoot 56 were also considered as the Dropkick Murphys from Chicago, but thanks to their latest albums this has changed. Do you feel that the new album is the evidence that you have your own identity?

It’s true that both of us have bagpipes and our name is the title of one of their songs. Anyway I feel that musically we have shown that we are closer to other bands. I think that the new album follows the same path that was opened with our debut album and it strengthens our own identity.

Finally, which is your goal as a band?

We enjoy travelling, giging and partying. We will try to do this, to visit new places, to meet people and drink  local spirits as long as we can . And we are proud to represent Galiza out there, of course!

REVIEW - UNCLE BARD & THE DIRTY BASTARDS "Up the Bastards!" (2013)

Uncle Bard & The Dirty Bastards "Up the Bastards" Self-released (2013)
Release date: 5 February 2013
Running time: 12:41, 4 tracks

Uncle Bard and The Dirty Bastards, a seven piece band hailing from the North of Italy, released in 2010 a standards album titled “Drinking not Thinking”. During the following years the band members did a busking tour in Great Britain and Ireland, shared the stage with Dropkick Murphys and  began to write their own material.

“Up the Bastards!” is the next step in their evolution: only one song is an Irish standard, “Come Out Ye Black and Tans”, the other three tracks are self-penned songs.

The opener “Up the Bastards!” is the most festive track on the EP. It’s a song about themselves and an ode to the life in the pubs (booze and musicians). The song features a couple of traditional tunes.

The next two songs deal with similar topics, but the rhythm is different. “Part of Me” is  the most rocking song and  can be filed together with songs such as “(Dublin in) the Rare Auld Times” or The Men They Couldn’t HangCompany Town”. Our towns grow and they become something we don’t like. But we keep on loving them. Musically, the song is a Tossers infused number featuring amazing banjo, tin whistle and fiddle.

I Did Not Belong to This World” is the real lament on the EP, both lyrically and musically. It’s a slow number and it features awesome Uileann pipes played by Luca Crespi. It also has some Tossers influences blended with a Mahones touch.

Finally, “Come Out Ye Black and Tans” is an energetically rendition played with gusto.

Up the Bastards!” was released in February 2013, but July 2013 seems to be the band’s month: they have released a video for the song “Up the Bastards!”, they have played the big festival Rock im Ring in Ritten and they have been chosen as Band of the Month at our Spanish e-zine Celtic Punk Rock. Don’t be a lazy sod and get this EP as soon as possible. Maybe the band’s name is too obvious, but they are a blast!

Tracklist:

1. Up the Bastards! 3:35
2. Part of me  2:16
3. I Did Not Belong to This World 3:46

This is the second Black 47 live recording that is posted. The track list is a little bit differet and it was taped last Saint Patrick's Day.

This is taken from the taper's liner notes: Speaking of taping, the band has a great attitude: "Black 47 encourages fans to record (audio and video) its performances. Each gig is different. The band has never done the same set twice. So tape away to your heart's content and feel free to pass the results along to others - just don't sell them."

"Nu Klezmer Army brings new life and energy to the traditional music of the yiddish-speaking jews of Eastern Europe. Melding together each player's diverse musical background, NKA brings forth an undeniably fun incarnation of instrumental, dance oriented, emotionally charged, klezmer music. Equal parts wandering gypsy, pickled punk, cut-rate circus, and drunken rabbi, Nu Klezmer Army stays true to the traditions of learning from one another over bottles of shlivovitz and sharing stories of out travels. We have played everything from the seediest of punk rock dive bars, to ornate historic theaters, brass band and circus festivals (although we are neither a brass band or circus), vegan dinners, city sponsored ground breaking ceremonies, midnight in the mountains around a fire and we are up for just about anything."

REVIEW - THE TOSSERS "The Emerald City" (2013)

The Tossers "The Emerald City" Victory Records VR691 (2013)
Release date: 8 March 2013
Running time: 40:15, 14 tracks

Five years have gone by since The Tossers released their previous album, “On A Fine Spring Evening” (2008). However, this delay has been worth the wait. “The Emerald City” is an excellent album, the evidence that The Tossers are the only band to give The Pogues a run for their money.

The album title and its cover are obvious: “The Emerald City” is a tribute to their city, Chicago. But there is another subtle tribute lying underneath, a tribute to The Dubliners. Back in 1988 the late Ronnie Drew and his band mates released an album titled “The Dubliner’s Dublin”. “The Emerald City” turns around a similar idea and a lot of numbers are Chicago sketches: “Emerald City", “USA”, “The South Side of Town”, “God Bless You”, “Johnny McGuire's Wake”. Nevertheless, The Dubliners' shadow is always there: “Bombo Lane” is a song from “Dubliner’s Dublin” and  “The Fermoy Lasses and Sporting Paddy” is one of the most famous Dubliners sets of tunes. Besides,  Luke Kelly and The Dubliners are mentioned on “Johnny McGuire's Wake” and The Chief O’Neil on “The Break of Dawn” gave name to another tune on The Dubliners repertoire (“Chief O’Neil’s Favourite”).

If you are a Tossers diehard fan, stay calm. The fast-paced catchy anthems about booze have not been put aside: “The Break of Dawn”, “Where the Beer and the Whiskey Flow”, “Here’s a Drink with You”, “Sláinte” … But the most interesting numbers, together with the single “The Emerald City”, would be the risky ones: “God Bless You” (featuring a kick-ass fiddling by Rebecca), “U.S.A.” and, above all, “Wherever You go” a three-songs-in-one top-notch song. This number is the evidence that Tonny Duggins songwriting can rival with Shane MacGowan’s.

The album has been produced once again by Andy Gerber (he has produced all The Tossers albums that Victory records have released) and harp by Aislinn Gaigliardi is featured on “Saint Patricks’ Day” and Uileann pipes by Sean Gavin are featured on “Saint Patrick’s Day” and “The South Side of Town”. The sticker on the CD states “A traditional Irish punk band from the South side of Chicago that has been staying true to a lost genre & has been at it for over 20 years”. And that’s the point:  they have evolved, but they have not lost their roots. As a result they have released one of the Top3 albums of 2013.

The Tossers have always been one of the "Big Five" together with Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Real McKenzies and The Mahones . They predate some of them and even if they are praised by colleagues and critics alike, they have not been able to break through. It’s really a shame, because they deserve more than a cult following. They have succeded in creating a parallel universe to The Pogues one. Maybe they should tour Europe as much as The Real McKenzies and The Mahones. I’m sure that the effort would pay off.
