BOOTLEG - THE LEVELLERS Paradiso, Amsterdam November 2008

After having released "Zeitgeist" the Levellers were at the top. The next album , "Mouth to Mouth", was not so good, but at least it belongs to their best era. The following albums ("Hello Pig", "Green Blade Rising" and "Truth and Lies") were not very good. "Green Blade Rising" has a couple of excellent tracks ("Come On" and "Four Winds") but the fans had to wait till "Letters from the Underground" (2008) to get a "real" Levellers album.

This is a boot from their gig in Amsterdam in November 2008. I went to the gig at the Musik Zentrum in Hannover and I can say that the shows from that tour were really great. Enjoy!

REVIEW - LIVING LÂCHE "This is Radio Living Lâche" Moshel Kamadu Records MKCD02 (2011)

Living Lâche "This is Radio Living Lâche" Moshel Kamadu Records MKCD02 (2011)
Release date: 18 April 2011
Running time: 47:52, 14 tracks

This is Radio Clash” is the title of a song on an EP released by The Clash in 1981 that featured four different versions of the same song. That song was supposed to be the next “Magnificent Seven”. “This is Radio Living Lâche” doesn’t feature four versions of the same hip hop song. Quite the contrary, it’s a 14 track album released by the prolific Austrian band Living Lâche. I say prolific because the band was born in 2001 and they have released one demo CD, seven albums, one live album, one acoustic album and one “best of” CD in ten years.

Living Lâche’s 8 th studio CD is a concept album with interesting lyrics. No, the band has not changed their sound. The lo-fi and chaotic music the band is renowned for is till there. That’s their trade mark and therefore that’s what their fan base expects.

The album has an intro and an outro, some funny radio jingles (in German) and self-deprecating humour in the liner notes (“Best grammatical errors included!”).

The main tracks of the album are “Credously Idiot” (a song featuring fiddle and accordion about copyright that resembles The Levellers), "Celtic Funk Medley" (featuring “Morrison’s Jig”) and “Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging” (my fave). Other highlights are “A Really Great Messed Up Story” (The boys making a Billy Bragg style song), “What’s Wrong” (That’s the prrof that Living Lâche do love Nyah Fearties) and “And Many More” (another well written song featuring fiddle and accordion).

If you are in Vienna (Austria) next December 4th, don’t miss Living Lâche opening for Oysterband at the Szene.

BOOTLEG - THE YOUNG DUBLINERS "Live in Tucson"

(From Wikipedia)

The Young Dubliners (sometimes shortened to the Young Dubs) is an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1988. Their style of music has come to be called Celtic Rock, for the fusion of Irish traditional instruments and music with modern rock. They have released eight albums - Rocky Road, Breathe, Alive Alive’O, Red, Absolutely, Real World, With All Due Respect - The Irish Sessions and Saints and Sinners. They have toured the United States and Europe since 1994, and have supported Jethro Tull, John Hiatt, Chris Isaak, Jonny Lang, Great Big Sea, and Collective Soul. All Music.com states, “Their live shows (have) a jam-like appeal, similar to the vibes of Phish and the Dave Matthews Band.”Members include lead vocalist and guitarist Keith Roberts, bassist Brendan Holmes, violinist Chas Waltz, guitarist Bob Boulding, and drummer David Ingraham. Their repertoire consists largely of original rock compositions and Irish folk songs with a rock twist. Their influences include Thin Lizzy, The Pogues, The Waterboys and U2.

Origins

The Young Dubliners were founded in 1988 by Dublin natives Keith Roberts and Paul O’Toole. The two began playing together at the Irish Rover in Santa Monica, California, and while trading off lead vocals and blending Roberts aggressive acoustic guitar work with O’Toole’s mandolin and harmonica, they began to craft an original style immediately. “Roberts had been tweaking some Irish ballads of his own and opted that a band would be in order. O'Toole obliged, as well as Brendan Holmes (bass). “Their shows were recorded by their soundman, Rob McCulley. Based on these recordings, the Young Dubliners produced their first original song, "Keaton’s Bar", and a cassette tape of Irish folk and pop songs recorded live at the Irish Rover entitled "The Young Dubliners". After this recording, the line-up of the band changed continuously. The only constant band member during this time was bassist Brendan Holmes, who grew up near Roberts in the Dublin suburb of Dún Laoghaire (Dunleary) . Songs like "Dirty Old Town", "Fisherman’s Blues" and "Rocky Road to Dublin" became essential songs. After having been directly influenced by Celtic musician Christy Moore and Irish band The Furey Brothers, The Young Dubliners released their second original song "Home", on an eponymously titled second cassette. Unlike their first cassette, their second cassette was recorded in a studio and featured additional musicians and overdubs, but otherwise had a similar mix of Irish folk and pop songs. After this, they stopped playing at The Irish Rover exclusively and branched out to other venues.

Phase One: Rocky Road to Alive, Alive’o

In 1993, Roberts became part owner and operator of Fair City Dublin, an Irish pub and live music venue in Santa Monica. By this time the lineup of the band consisted of dual-frontmen Roberts and O’Toole, Holmes, lead guitarist Randy Woolford, violinist Lovely Previn (daughter of conductor Andre Previn), woodwinds player Jeff Dellisanti, and drummer Jon Mattox. By now the band had played various venues throughout California, and as they became the house band at Fair City, their popularity increased dramatically. In 1994, the act was signed to the Scotti Brother’s record label, and they were teamed with producer Micheal Blum to record their debut album, the EP Rocky Road.

Rocky Road featured mostly original material, save for the band’s version on the title track, “Rocky Road to Dublin”. The single “Last House on the Street”, became a hit nationally on the Adult Album Alternative radio format, and immediately the group began to tour the US in support. Many of the areas the band found the most popularity - Colorado, Utah, the Northeast, in addition to California - remain the biggest selling shows for the Young Dubliners to this day.

In 1995, the group recorded and released its first full-length album, Breathe. While the line-up remained the same, the personnel had changed; violinist Lovely Previn had left the group to be replaced by Kansas City-native Chas Waltz, formerly of the group Shooting Star. Like Rocky Road, Breathe featured mostly original material, but also included the band’s reworkings of traditional Irish songs such as “Foggy Dew” and “Follow Me Up to Carlow”, both of which are live concert favorites still. The singles from this album included “Mary” and “Change the World”.

During the next two years, the Young Dubs continued to tour the US, all the while building a solid following throughout the western states. Although their contract with Scotti Brothers records ended, new songs were being worked up. Chas Waltz exited the band to form his own band Judy Judy Judy; he was replaced by Mark Epting.

In 1997, the group signed with Cargo Music, Inc. and recorded a live album at the Belly Up in Solana Beach, CA. The recording was produced by Steve Albini. Although the live tracks were mixed at Abbey Road Studios in London, the mixes were rejected by Cargo Music; the finished album was mixed in Track Star Studio in San Diego by Josquin Des Pres and Tour Manager/FOH engineer Don Tartaro. Titled Alive Alive’o, the album featured seven live songs. Most of the cuts were new original compositions; one was a cover of the Waterboys' “Fisherman’s Blues”, and two were live versions of previously recorded songs. The original song “Blink” was added as a bonus studio track to finish the running order, and a video for the song was produced. Alive Alive’O was released on February 10, 1998, and gathered warm reviews. Daily Vault said “(the album) shows that they are not a product of the producer's skills, but instead, can thrive in the challenging live environment.”

Just prior to the release of Alive Alive’O, co-founder and second lead vocalist Paul O’Toole quit the band. In his place, Keith Roberts began to sing lead on the traditional Irish ballads the band covered live (as O’Toole was often the singer on those type of songs). Violinist Epting began to double on mandolin and harmonica, and the Young Dubliners carried on as a six piece group while touring to support the new CD release.

Phase Two: Red

In 1999, lead guitarist Randy Wolford announced his retirement from touring and left the band. He was replaced by Southern California native Bob Boulding, who joined the band during the summer tour of that year. After the conclusion of that national tour, drummer Jon Mattox followed suit and also gave notice that he would leave the band. However, Mattox stayed on as a studio musician for the production of their next album, Red. Red was the Young Dubliners' first release for their new record label, Higher Octave and was produced by Thom Pununzio. At the request of the label, many of the songs on Red were new, studio-recorded versions of the songs from Alive Alive’O. Included was the live barnstormer medley “Rising / Change The World.” Additionally, four new originals were featured, including the instrumental “Bodhran” (named after the Irish drum which starts out the track), and the title track “Red”, cowritten with Elton John lyricist Bernie Taupin.

After the recording of the album, it was time to fill drummer Jon Mattox’s shoes; after a brief run with former Lord of the Dance drummer Gary Sullivan, the order was filled when the band enlisted David Ingraham, formerly of Bruce Dickinson's band and Tribe of Gypsys. Soon, the Young Dubliners were touring in support of Red which was released in June, 2000.

Starting in June, the group was booked as the support act for Jethro Tull on their summer tour of the United States. Early on it became apparent that the Young Dubs’ blend of hard rock and Celtic styles was a perfect compliment to Tull’s style of progressive rock, and band gathered many new fans during the tour. Later that summer the group played dates opening for John Hiatt and the Goners. This drove sales of Red to the highest in the band’s career.

Phase Three: Absolutely to present

During 2001, the Young Dubliners continued to tour seasonally throughout the US. In the spring of that year, violinist Mark Epting announced his retirement from the group to pursue writing screenplays. Chas Waltz returned to the band after a five year absence.

During the summer the band was booked as the support act for Jethro Tull on their tour of Europe, playing 30 shows throughout Germany, Italy, Holland, France, Belgium, and Switzerland.

After the fall tour, the group began writing material for their next album. During preproduction, multi-instrumentalist Jeff Dellisanti announced he would leave the band to retire from touring. He did stay on as a studio musician to add tin whistle, woodwinds, and keyboards to the tracks for the new album, which became Absolutely.

Absolutely, produced by John Wooler and engineered by Sally Browder, had a generally newer sound for the Young Dubliners. The production was sparser, influenced by the wave of new garage rock bands like the Strokes. Most of the material was cowritten by the entire band, another first for the act. The singles released off the album were “Scream” and “Knickers”, the latter being used as the soundtrack for a national TV ad campaign for the Killian’s Red beer brand.

Absolutely was released in June 2002, and again the Young Dubliners toured in the US supporting Jethro Tull. After the conclusion of that tour, the band joined with Canadian band Great Big Sea and American Celtic rock band Seven Nations and played as the Uprooted package tour. As the tour commeced throughout the US, the nightly order of the bands was determined by which group was the biggest draw in the area - thus GBS headlined shows in the Northeast, Seven Nations headlined in the Southeast, and the Young Dubs headlined in the western States.

During 2003, the band negotiated to record a third album for Higher Octave. Unlike their previous albums, the group was afforded a lengthy time to write and record the songs during 2004. Titled Real World, the album was produced by Dublin-native Tim Boland in Los Angeles.

During the recording of Real World, Keith Roberts underwent surgery to remove nodes from his vocal cords, which resulted in a slight delay in recording and touring during 2004.

In the summer of ‘04, the band opened for Jonny Lang.

The album was released on February 15th, 2005, and received glowing national reviews. The Washington Post published,”’Real World’ might finally be the commercial gold at the end of the rainbow for this criminally under-appreciated rock band.”Amazon.com stated, “(the songs) range from stadium-friendly extravaganzas to more intimate but equally outspoken pub-sized opuses. Lead singer Keith Roberts' powerhouse vocals front a maelstrom of fiddle vamps, howling guitars and frenzied drums. But even so, the hint of rueful melancholy that lies at the heart of traditional Celtic music survives, transformed yet triumphant.”

The band toured Ireland in November, 2005. In November 2006, they returned to Ireland, and toured Denmark for the first time.

2006 saw the group’s contract with Higher Octave come to a close; they subsequently signed with their current label, 429 Records. The seventh release the Young Dubliners recorded was titled With All Due Respect - The Irish Sessions; this was an album filled entirely with covers of Irish ballads and shanties - reworked in the group’s trademark style. Released in February 2007, With All Due Respect was the fastest selling CD for the band to date, with much publicity hitting nationally during their March Madness tour which climaxed with the sold-out Shamrocker festival in San Diego.

In the summer of 2007, the Young Dubliners toured Denmark, appearing at many large festivals, including Tunoe Island, where a live recording of their entire show was produced. Also, they performed a handful of shows in Norway, and at the G! Festival in the Faroe Islands.

On March 15, 2008, the group appeared live on the CBS Early Show. During March and April, 2008, they toured the United States, Ireland, and Denmark.

Beginning in early 2008, the band recorded their latest album. Titled Saints And Sinners, the CD was released on February 3, 2009, on 429 Records.

REVIEW - 9 CASTLE CLOSE EP Self-released (2011)

9 Castle Close EP Self-released (2011)
Release date: 29 July 2011
Running time: 11:51, 3 tracks

I love Celtic rock. But, at the same time, I must admit that often some of the Celtic rock bands follow the same clichés: kilts, pipes, good set of tunes, a lot of standards and some poor self-penned songs. Even if a few US bands are very popular, I feel that the best bands come from Canada: Mudmen and Enter the Haggis.

Last year I bought an album from a band from Central Ohio, Homeland. After some line-up changes, the band has added a piper. “Bridge” was a very good album. The band did a fine job; however, some of the original songs were a little bit irregular. Anyway, "Bridge" was the evidence that something was changing in the US pipes/Celtic rock scene.

9 Castle Close also come from Ohio, from the Dayton/Columbus area. The band members are Kevin Maloney (vocals, guitar, banjo, bouzouki), Patrick Disney (guitars, keyboards, vocals), Mike Thomas (bass, vocals) ,Ryan Gross (drums, vocals), Beth Hicks (flute, Irish whistles) and Stuart Brand (Fiddle). When I look to the band’s pictures and videos I see no kilts. And the line-up has no piper. But, who needs kilts and pipes to play the best Celtic rock around when one has the right balance between energy and musicianship?

Yes, 9 Castle Close has no pipes but they sound better than many bagpipes rock bands. Excellent whistle player and fiddler fit perfectly with the great rhythm section and guitars. Everybody knows the song formula, to blend traditional tunes with rock instruments and new lyrics. It seems easy, but most of the bands fail. However, 9 Castle Close has succeeded with this 3 track EP.

The expectations for the debut album are high. Taking into account that the air from Ohio (or maybe the local beer) has had good effect on other bands from that state (Homeland, The Bloody Irish Boys and Craic), I’m sure that I won’t be disappointed.

3 DAFT MONKEYS - SEPTEMBER 2011 NEWS

"Phewee, what a summer. We’ve had such an amazing time, so many memories of so many wicked gigs and frolicking audiences. Thank you so much for being the bestest audiences ever. And not too much mud either (well quite a lot, but we’ve forgotten it already in a haze of music and partying). And plenty of sunshine too. It’s been amazing to see what a diversity of people we have drawn to the dance-floor this summer, you’re certainly an interesting and beautiful bunch of primates to watch from our raised podium.

Your response to our new line-up and songs has been fabulous, so thanks again for being so wonderful. We’ve really enjoyed leaping off stages after our shows to meet you all, it’s been great fun.

We’ll be putting some pictures up from the summer on our website in the next few weeks, so keep checking.

LOTS of things to tell you…

We´re releasing a single on November 6th

We’ve jiggled around and re-recorded your favourite song of the summer “Days of the Dance” and we’ve been lucky enough to have it mixed by Jim Lowe who works with the Stereophonics and Amy McDonald amongst others. Athene and Lukas have put a whole string section on it, and it sounds absolutely epic, which we feel is fitting for such a dramatic song. We can’t wait for you to hear it. It will be available as a download on 6th November ready for the tour. We’ll also be making a video, so watch this space.

Tickets on sale for our November tour

Tickets are on sale for ALL the venues now so check out the dates on our website and the bottom of this page, and we’ll dance our way through the autumn breezes. Richie will be joining us on percussion for the whole tour so you’ll get the full “4-monkey” extravaganza

(From Triple J Unearthed)

"Majik Trolz offer a lively look and laugh at society. Great original music with a message. It really crosses all genre of music. It could be blues but no it's rock, but not really, maybe country, certainly the music has it's roots in the country. You tell us. The sometimes cutting and often cynical lyrics are guaranteed to put a lot of noses out of joint. relax and laugh at yourself as we laugh at us (AND U.S.). The music has it's roots in the country. Slide guitar and rhythm guitar mixed with harmonica or just occasionally a lead guitar. An acoustic experience (sorry Jimi Hendrix). "

"The WhiskeyDicks are a raving group of Celtic Gypsy Punk Rockers who have a throbbing reputation as "One Hell of a Good Time". They began in 2001 outside the liquor store in Whitehorse when a pair of brothers and one good friend set out to earn money to spend at the liquor store by playing music about liquor in front of said liquor store (for more details, listen to “chim chimney” from Get’er done, 2008).

Since moving to Vancouver in 2002, the band has earned themselves a handful of music degrees and a large fan-base in BC and the Yukon, where they’ve continued to perform four or five times a year since they left.

They are a strange brew of Fiddle, Cello, Guitar, Drums, Accordion and Voices spiked with enthusiasm that is infectious and eclecticism that knows no bounds. Simply put, they’re a bunch of highly trained musicians out for a good time, playing songs about friendship, drinking and drinking with friends with the spirit of the mad and the thirst of a sailor who just got kicked out of his metal band. It is quite simply impossible to have a bad time with them in the room cause they won't let you... well, come on then, let's do a shot. Last one to break the table with their glass buys the next round!"

REVIEW - Mr. IRISH BASTARD "Never Mind The Bastards - Here Is Mr. Irish. Bollocks" Reedo Records (2011)

Mr. Irish Bastard "Never Mind the Bastards Here Is Mr. Irish Bollocks" Reedo Records (2011)
Release date: 23 September 2011
Running time: 38:40, 12 tracks

Never Mind the Bastards-Here Is Mr. Irish Bollocks” is the title of Mr. Irish Bastard’s fourth album. This is not the first time that an album by an early punk band is fully covered. For instance, Screeching Weasel covered the Ramones full debut album and The Queers covered the Ramones full third album, “Rocket to Russia”. Moreover, it’s not the first time that a Celtic rock/punk band covers the Sex Pistols. A cover of "Holidays in the Sun" can be found on the Swiss band Glen of GuinnessBack & Side” album. However, the originality of Mr. Irish Bastard’s new work is that they are the first band to cover the whole Sex Pistols debut album from a paddypunk approach.

The album has been recorded during eight months in four different studios and the band admits that it keeps a “healthy dose of respect for the original”. It’s true, there is respect, but, at the same time, all the songs get the MIB treatment. And there is a wonderful surprise, MIB used a brass section (sax, trumpet and trombone) on several tracks: “Problems”, “God Save the Queen”, “Anarchy in the UK” and “Submission”.

Tin whistle, banjo and accordion can be found on almost every track. IMHO, the tin whistle arrangements are top-notch and the accordion sounds perfect on tracks such as “Pretty Vacant” (it recalls The PoguesTurkish Song of the Damned”) or "EMI" (it makes me think of The Stranglers’ keyboards on their first and second album).

My faves: “Holidays in the Sun”, “Bodies”, “Problems”, “God Save the Queen”, “Pretty Vacant” and “EMI

BAND OF THE MONTH - CRAIC

The band of the month is Craic. Their EP "It's Still New Enough That It's Forgivable" is so good that they deserve to be featured as band of the month.

"The American-Irish Punk Band Craic, named for the Gaelic term meaning interesting banter & good company including music & good drink, takes traditional Irish music and turns it into an energy driven, fist pumping, “in your face” good time. Craic is full of a wide diversity of influence which makes the talent of the band stand out, from the beautiful sounds of the tin whistle, to the plucky hollow, bright, incisive clarity of the banjo, to the rich deep sound of the 12 string guitar, to the lusterous, sweet, clear fiddle, all backed up by drums, bass and the distortion of the electric guitar. Topped off with the wailing voices of all, you’ll surely enjoy the full-body sound of Craic."

Members:

Brett M. Burlison - Lead vocals
Eric Rom - Electric and acoustic guitars, vocals
Tim Clausing - 12-string acoustic guitar
Jason "Gojko" Kollar - Bass and vocals
Mitch Kozub - Banjo and vocals
Andrea D'Amore - Fiddle
Nikki Wolfe - Tin whistle and vocals
James McWilliam - Drums

VIDEOS - THE LASH

The Lash is a band from Lansing, MI (USA)

(From their Reverbnation page)

When The Lash was formed in 1996, their turbo-driven take on Celtic music was considered so radical that performances were protested by local folk music organizations. Twelve years later, the genre of Celtic Rock is widely accepted, but the self-proclaimed purveyors of “Celtic Mayhem” are still mixing musical styles.

The Lash combines folk instruments like fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and cittern with bass and drums, and the result is like little else found on the music scene.

In the end, there’s only one thing that makes The Lash different from other bands. It’s not that they don’t follow the rules of music. It’s that they don’t even acknowledge them.

Fun Facts about The Lash! (From their MySpace)

**The name of the band came from an album by The Pogues: "Rum, Sodomy, and The Lash". That phrase is popularly attributed to Winston Churchill, and was supposedly from a comment he made about the disciplinary tactics of the British Navy. In fact, he never said it- kinda like Humphrey Bogart never actually said "Play it again, Sam".

** The name "The Lash" was suggested by original lead vocalist, Tim Marzorati. Until then, the band was dangerously close to being called The Young Neds" from The Pogues' song, "Young Ned of the Hill".

**Aside from the obvious definitions of "lash" (a restraint, a whip, the little hairs on your eyelid), it has several Irish slang connotations; among them: to urinate ("I gotta lash like a race horse"), to party or drink excessively ("I was out on the lash all weekend, but I'm going to lay low for a couple days"), or to fight ("we got kicked out of the pub last week for lashing with the bikers").

**You may have heard other bands describe their music as "Celtic Mayhem", but The Lash was the first- at least as far as The Library of Congress is concerned.

**The band line up on "Celtic Mayhem Live" is generally refered to as "the original line up", but it's not. The original line up of the band included a lead vocalist, a bodhran player, a different mandolin player (Chad Lovewell), and there was no whistle player.

**The first performance by The Lash consisted of 12 songs by The Pogues, and one by Willie Nelson.

**Jerry Lew Patterson was the bodhran player in the original line up of the band, but turned up later to play the guitar solo on "Bad Tattoo" (from "Every Direction"). After "Every Direction" was released, Jerry joined as the band's full time guitar player, and toured with The Lash for several months.

**The first version of "Every Direction" was initially recorded with Rob Klajda, Mike Lynch, Jesse Soriano, Jason Portier, and Mark Jagmin. When Jesse, Jason, and Mark left the band, the album was re-recorded with the new line up. The first version of "Every Direction" remains in the vault.

**The Lash has had seven different drummers, seven different bass players, and seven different mandolin players. To date, there have been 15 different line up changes. Rob Klajda is the only current member who was at the very first rehearsal.

**Buyers in France have purchased nearly 30% of the total copies sold of The Lash's second disc, "Every Direction".

**The very first original song performed by The Lash was "After the Struggle", written by Mike Lynch and Rob Klajda. The most requested song is still "Whiskey Made Me Do It" by Jesse Soriano, although nobody remembers how to play that one anymore.

**Glenn Brown, who recorded all the discs released by The Lash (so far), has also recorded Frank Sinatra, done mixdowns for Spinal Tap, designed studios for Kid Rock and Eminem, and produced the musical score for the movie "First in Show". The mixing console at his studio is the same one Lynyrd Skynyrd used to record "Free Bird".

REVIEW - BETWEEN THE WARS "The Rats" Slippery Slope Recordings (2011)

Between The Wars "The Rats" Slippery Slope Recordings
Release Date: 26 August 2011
Running Time: 25:13, 7 tracks

Between the Wars is the title of an EP and a song that Billy Bragg released in 1985 . The song was covered by The Oyster Band on their 1987 album “Wide Blue Yonder”. But, at the same time, Between the Wars is the name of a young band hailing from Melbourne (Australia) that was featured on our May 2011 sampler.

The Rats” is their second recording after having released a full album last year. Their debut album featured some trad.covers and some original songs. Among them, a couple of gems: the pop song “Super Hero Song” and “The Ballad of The First Fleet”, a number about Australian history.

The brand new EP has no traditional covers, "The Ballad of The First Fleet” has been included once again and the sound is maybe more Celtic pop-rock. Although the sound is acoustic on some songs (tracks 4 and 5) and the music and vocals are not too aggressive, the lyrics follow the folk (punk) tradition. The band writes about the XVIIth century “emigration” to Australia (“The Tail of The Rats”, “The Ballad of The First Fleet”) fighting and dying for "another man's cause" ("Lone Pine") and let us know what they intend to become as a band (“Hourglass”).

Influences come from different sources: Australian artists (Eric Bogle, Weddings Parties Anything even Popproperly Celtic pop) and English artists: (Billy Bragg, The Men They Couldn’t Hang, The Levellers …)

The first song, “The Tail of The Rats” is about Irish people been taken to Botany Bay. Musically it could fit on a TMTCH album and the violin sounds a little bit Oysterband.

The next track is about the Kiwis and the Aussies that came to Turkey during the I World War. A fiddle led Celtic pop-rock sounding song with a Paddy Goes to Holyhead sound.

Echoes from The Levellers "Zeigeist" era can be heard on “Horses and Violins”.

Song no. 5 is an acoustic song but when 2 min 45 sec have gone by, there is a u-turn and drums and bass are added to the mix.

“Irish Rebel Song” is, together with the first and the last song, one of the best moments on the album. Imagine a less vocally aggressive Fisticuffs . Great chorus.

Finally, “The Ballad of the First Fleet” is a rocking number that also deals with the people who were forced to go to Botany Bay.

Between the Wars are friends of The Ramshackle Army. So, Celtic punk fans can be sure that BTW music is not a copycat band, but an interesting new sound coming from the land of Oz.

Tracklist:
