2018-02-21 ALBUM REVIEW - FINNEGAN'S HELL "Life and Death" Heptown Records (2018)

Finnegan's Hell "Live and Death" Heptown Records HTR076
Release date: February 23, 2018
Running time: 38:29, 13 tracks

During the last weeks the weather here has been colder than normal. Several cold waves have brought heavy snow. Then, I’ve spent the weekends watching TV series, for instance, Bron-Broen season 3 and Modus season 2. Cold, snow and Swedish TV series: that was the right atmosphere to welcome Celtic punk music from Sweden. So I was lucky when the postman delivered “Life and Death”, the second album by Finnegan’s Hell.

Finnegan’s Hell decided to take it easy and then their sophomore CD is going to be released almost four years after their debut album. This time there are no covers. Although the lyrics to “Isn’t it Grand Boys?” are traditional, all the music has been written by the band or by Pabst and/or Mick. 12 tracks about losers, workers and "different" people. The title is clear: “Life and Death” and Finnegan’s Hell have felt that a minute of silence was compulsory at the end of the album.

There are no experiments on “Life and Death”, but straightforward Celtic punk. Finnegan’s Hell is a well-oiled machine and the songs have been tested and played live during 4 years. Almost half of the songs are based on the banjo and the accordion sounds and the other half on the tin whistle and the accordion sounds.

First of all, I review the songs where the tin whistle can be heard and secondly the ones on which the banjo can be heard. “Shane MacGowan’s Grave” was not chosen as single, but it’s one of the standout tracks on the album and will soon become a classic song on the band’s repertoire. Upbeat song with a kick ass tune at the end. “Cursed” has a catchy chorus and it’s one of my fave tracks too. “How Am I to Make it?" is a fantastic fast-paced cut about a loser.  “Whatcha gonna do?” is the closing number. It has the Finnegan’s Hell’s classic sound and some gang vocals, but I prefer the previous numbers.

As told before, Finnegan’s Hell have put new music to “Isn’t it Grand Boys”. Most of the song sound as some monks singing backed by the banjo. But after the song comes to its end, there is a badass banjo led tune.

All In”, another song about a loser, has some banjo and gang vocals à la Dropkick Murphys. I’ve particularly enjoyed the lyrics to “Rude Awakening” (all the lyrics to the song can be found on the 28 page booklet). “The Bastard Son” is a hypnotic number that I have also loved. “Paradise Town” is probably the catchiest song on “Life and Death”. I understand why the guys made a video for this anthem. “One-Horse Town” is an excellent rocking number. I’ve also appreciated the lyrics to this song, since they remind me of The Men They Couldn’t HangCompany Town”. “Dance Upon Your Grave” has a Velvet Underground sounding intro, but soon the song burst into a fast-paced Celtic punk number featuring guest Carl Nyqvist on fiddle.

Coal Mine” was the first single off “Life and Death”. I must admit that I didn’t enjoy this song with a reggae vibe. However, the song has grown on me. Accordion and banjo are played all along the song, but the tin whistle is also played in the middle. Great lyrics that obviously remind me of The Whisky Priests earlier stuff, for instance, “The Colliery”.

I don’t like Ikea, but I enjoy Swedish TV series, crimes novels and Celtic punk bands. Finnegan’s Hell are really a solid band and both music and lyrics are top-notch on this CD. Therefore, “Life and Death” is a well-balanced album. Thanks to their label Heptown Records for chosing the right date for the release of the album. A plethora of CDs will be released on St. Patrick’s Day and that will make us difficult to pay attention to all of them.

2018-02-15 INTRODUCING EL BATALLÓN DE SAN PATRICIO

The Celtic punk scene is alive and kicking in Brazil. Little by little, new bands are established in other countries such as Argentina or Chile. But so far we have only heard of a couple of (Celtic) folk-punk bands in Mexico, Lucky 7 and Old Drunks.

El Batallón de San Patricio is a 6 piece band from Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico. They just played their debut gig last Sunday.

El Batallón de San Patricio has uploaded to Bandcamp some songs recorded at their rehearsal room. One of them, a cover of Flogging Molly "Drunken Lullabies" is available as a free download.

The story of the real San patricios can be checked out here.

2018-02-04 ALBUM REVIEW - TIR NA NOG "From the Gallows" (2018)

Tir Na Nog "From the Gallows"
Release date: January 12, 2018
Running time: 47:54, 14 tracks

Tír Na nÓg is a name (with different spellings) that has been chosen by several bands. Tír na nÓg is a progressive-folk band founded in Dublin in 1969. Tir na N’Og is a Celtic rock band from Serbia formed in 2008 that changed its name to Alfapop when they started playing power pop. And Tir Na Nog is a Celtic rock band from Bavaria, Germany. “From the Gallows” is their fifth offering. They have previously released 3 albums and one EP: “After Work” (2.009), “Bitte Brew” (2.012), “Jack of Folk” (2.015) and “Ardacris” (2.016). Tir Na Nog is Volker Katzki (“Volker”, drums), Joachim Fink (“Joggl”, bass), Robert Meyer (“Robert”, lead vocals and acoustic guitar) Mathias Pracht (“Matze”, fiddle), and new members Sarah Kucharek (“Sarah”, vocals, futes) and Andreas Fingas (“Andi”, flutes, bagpipes).

Although three of the songs are related to the gallows subject (“Hangman’s Tale”, “Last Farewell” and maybe “O’Hanlon’s Last Words”), “From the Gallows" is not a concept album. Tir Na Nog uses traditional tunes or bits of tunes on some appealing songs. For instance, “Tam Lin” can be heard on “O’Hanlon’s Last Words”; "Gravel Walk” on “Hangman's Tale”; and “Keel Row” and another tune on “Story of Me Life” (and no, it isn’t the Social Distortion song). There is a full instrumental number on “From the Gallows”: “Bastard Reel”. This cut is dedicated to Mr. Irish Bastard. Tir Na Nog say that they wrote that tune when the gig that they were supposed to play with Mr. Irish Bastard was cancelled because MIB singer hurt his leg. The instrumental features the traditional tune “The High Reel”.

Celtic punk fans will enjoy the kick ass tracks “3 Nights in Town” and “Shawn O’Malley” (a song on which guest Silvia Lehmeier plays banjo). A video was shot for “Shawn O’Malley”, check it out at the bottom. Together with them, some Celtic pop songs stand out: “Monster (in my Mind)”, with flute, tin whistle and fiddle, and “Black November”, where the rhythm section perfectly backs the rest of the band. “Firestorm” is another interesting track. Sarah sings lead vocals and there are fantastic oh-oh-oh backing vocals, fiddle and bagpipes.

The last track performed by Tir Na Nog is a cover of “Wenn ich ton bin”, a song by a band called Luna Luna. This is the last song to be played at a Tir Na Nog gig, and a previous version can be found on “Bitte Brew”.

The bonus tracks are Tir Na Nog’s songs that are performed by some friends: “Sometimes When I’m Drunk” (original version on “After Work”) is played by Kilkenny Knights while “Johann der Pirat” (“Johnny the Pirate” on “Jack of Folk”) by Nobody Knows. Good choice of songs and bands to close the album.

From the Gallows” comes in a four panel digipack with an 8 page booklet. It has been released by Prosodia, the label run by Nobody Knows member Max.

I’m not familiar with the band’s previous CDs. But after having checked out their track listings, I can say that “From the Gallows” is their most personal work. Most of the tracks are self-penned songs and the band is really tight.

Track listing:

01. O'Hanlon's Last Words 03:34
02. Hangman's Tale 03:28
03. Firestorm 03:43
04. Monster (in my mind) 05:58
05. Last Farewell 03:54
06. 3 Nights in Town 02:31

09. Black November 03:55
10. Bastard Reel 01:45

2018-02-01 NAME YOUR PRICE DOWNLOADS - JIMMY GEORGE

Jimmy George have been previously featured on Celtic Folk Punk and More (links here). They are featured again, since their debut album "A Month Of Sundays" and their compilation "Same Sh#!%t Different Night" (minus the covers) are available as a Name Your Price Download at Bandcamp.

(Source: https://archive.li/EHyUT#selection-791.0-809.256)

"No, there is no one in the band named Jimmy. The origins of the band name have remained secret since the members swore an oath to never reveal its deeper meaning. Formed in 1991 as a busking band to raise spare change for food, cigarettes and beer, the band's first on-stage performance was at one of the regular Wednesday night talent competitions at the Duke of Somerset pub in Ottawa. They did not win. They were, however, offered a regular show at the Duke of Somerset, which they gladly accepted as visions of draught beer and cash danced in their heads. Five years later, Sunday nights at the Duke of Somerset have become synonymous with Jimmy George, and line-ups down the street are the norm. Noticed by CBC Radio producer Bill Stunt at one of their two opening slots with Spirit of the West in 1993, the band recorded their debut release, A Month of Sundays, with the CBC's assistance. The disc, released April 1st, 1994, is already in its fifth pressing and (so far) reaction has been unanimously good. The follow-up disc, Hotel Motel, was released by Cargo/MCA in November 1995. Their label, Cargo Records, went bankrupt in 1997.

A bit later, their home away from home, The Duke of Somerset, changed ownership and began renovations. With the disruption caused by the renovations and the departure of many of the staff, numbers started to decline for the weekly shows at the Duke. When drummer Tom Werbo decided to call it quits, the band faced the age-old decision: recruit and train a new drummer, or call it quits? The consensus was to take a hiatus as the thousands of shows were starting to take their toll on the band members' enthusiasm. So an officially-entitled "last show" was booked at Barrymore's in Ottawa on St. Patrick's day (of course), 1998.

Well, like many other bands, it was only a matter of time before the band members started to miss the crowds, the cash, and of course the beer, so on the occasion of mandolin player Joel Carlson's wedding in the spring of 2000, the band reunited to remember old songs and play amongst old friends. Without the stresses of a weekly show the old energy was back and the played in June 2000 at Barrymore's to a record crowd and consequently record beer sales.

2001 sees the band playing another showcase show at Barrymore's in April and the release of a compilation CD featuring previously released studio material, some unreleased live songs and one new studio track recalling their trip to the UK a few years back."

(Source: Wikipedia)

"The band have ceased recording and playing as a unit for the most part, playing a "final" show in 1997. They played regular "reunion" shows in Ottawa to celebrate St. Patrick's Day or over the Christmas holidays for several years. In April, 2002 the band headlined Ottawa's Tulip Festival Concert Series and played a headlining show at Ottawa's Barrymore's Music Hall, flying in accordion player Mickey Vallee for the occasion from his new home of Edmonton, Alberta.

October 7, 2007, the former owners and staff of the Duke of Somerset pub organized a reunion event at local pub The Heart and Crown. Jimmy George played two sets with the line-up of J (vocals/acoustic guitar), Jeff (banjo), Mike (electric guitar), Joel (mandolin/bass), Rob (drums), Steve (bass/mandolin/accordion) and guest appearances by Angela McFall (Fairytale of New York) and Madeleine Giguere (Rock and Roll Thing) on vocals and Colin Burns on bass for a few songs.

March 17, 2008, the band played a St. Patrick's Day show at Zaphod Beeblebrox in Ottawa. The lineup for this show consisted of J Todd (vocals, acoustic guitar), Joel Carlson (mandolin), Rob Porter (drums), Steve Donnelly (bass, electric guitar, accordion) and Colin Burns (bass on a few songs). This show was likely the smallest version of Jimmy George to ever perform live.

In December 2011 the band celebrated their 20th anniversary with 3 shows at Kaffe 1870 (Wakefield QC) and Elmdale House Tavern (Ottawa ON). Altman flew in from Japan for the occasion, and Vallee made the trek from western Canada. The band played to packed houses 3 nights in a row and the second night featured all three drummers from the band's history, Altman, founding member Rob Porter and Tom Werbowetski.

The members continue to perform in bands including: Bible All-Stars (Carlson); The Kingmakers, Ninety Pounds of Ugly (Donnelly); Mike McDonald Broadband (Vallee)

Several of the band's songs have been performed by other bands, most notably Breakfast With St. Swithin which appeared on Vancouver band The Town Pants' CD. Other bands have performed the band's Token Celtic Drinking Song despite the fact that the song has no official lyrics and many of the words are improvised and undiscernable even on the recorded version.

The band's songs have been featured in several television programs including Toddlers and Tiaras, and Southie Rules.

Though they usually played in Ottawa, on one memorable occasion, they played a bar in Toronto. Clearly unfamiliar with the demands of a Celtic rock band (that hated Celtic music) and its fans, the bar ran out of beer long before the band ran out of songs. Disgruntled fans made do with shots, mixed drinks, and sarcastic mutters. Later that evening, a second disaster nearly struck as Mickey, hands busy with an accordion solo, tried desperately to spit out a cigarette that had become dangerously stuck to his bottom lip. All was well, however, and shortly thereafter, the band played a cover of "Home for A Rest." The resultant dancing caused the floor to bounce, propelling even those who did not normally partake in rhythmic activities into lurching back and forth as the floor jigged and reeled. (Source: admittedly fuzzy memories of the evening.)"

2017: the band (J Todd -vocals, Michael Spike Lawson -guitar , Joel Carlson - mandolin, Jeff Kerr - banjo, Steve Donnelly - bass, Tim Connolly - drums, Stuart Rutherford - fiddle and Robert Alexander - accordion) played a St. Patrick's Day gig at House of TARG in Ottawa

2018-01-30 ALBUM REVIEW - THE DREADNOUGHTS "Foreign Skies" (2017)

The Dreadnoughts "Foreing Skies"
Release date: November 10, 2017
Running time: 43:04, 12 tracks

After a long hiatus, The Dreadnoughts came back in 2017 with their most ambitious album to date. “Foreign Skies” is a concept album about the First World War. At the rear of the digipack there is no standard track listing, but three acts: Act I, tracks from 1 to 5, Act II, tracks from 6 to 8 and Act III, tracks from 9 to 12.

My fave numbers belong to Act I, which is also the longest one. “Up High” is an excellent song with a British folk rock twist. “Foreign Skies” is The Dreadnoughts at its best: Ramones echoes at the beginning, fast paced accordion, woahs’s on the backing vocals, circus music, Eastern Europe sounds … and even a dash of Queen. “Daughters of the Sun” is a song about the sufraggettes. Fiddle and accordion punk with hey shouts and more gypsy touches. The next track is the polka on the album, “Amiens Polka”, while “The Bay of Suvla” is badass anti-war song. I love that a cappella shanty. However, there is a mistake on the liner notes: Ewan MacColl didn’t write “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda”. Scottish Australian folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle wrote that song, together with other brilliant anti-war numbers such as “The Green Fields of France (No Man’s Land)” and “All the Fine Young Men”.

Act II is probably the most “punk” of the three, with cuts like “Anna Maria” and “Jericho”. “Black and White” gets a classic Dreadnoughts treatment and it’s one of the highlights on the album.

The last act kicks off with “Gavrilo”, an upbeat Balkan song featuring horns. It’s followed by the quieter song on “Foreign Skies”: “A Broken World”, a piano number where guest Zoey Exley recites the words. The album is over with a couple of standout songs: “Black Letters” and “Back Home in Bristol”. The former gets a folkier treatment, while the later showcases The Dreadnoughts cider-punk.

Foreign Skies” was released last November 10, but a second album called “Foreign Skies.B-Sides” was issued last January 10. That digital only album includes "4 songs that weren't good enough to make "Foreign Skies"! But, ya know, they're still pretty good".

Don't forget to watch "Stoked
"a film Adam PW Smith finished a little while ago that shows The Dreadnoughts in all their glory. It features photos and footage from the past ten years (and some great stories), as well as a bit about the new record." (You'll find the video below)
